Board Newsletter

February 2020

Students are back and ready to tackle Semester 2… as is The Union! We had an amazing Refreshers’ Week with a huge variety of events, from one of RuPaul’s Drag Queens: Cheryl Hole, to Cascada, to our long-time favourite … Abba! Click on the images below to view our round-up film of the week and our Refreshers’ Fayre album.  This year our Societies Officer and DoSDA trialled an access hour, which meant that from 12- 12:30pm the Fayre was only open to students with disabilities.  It is something that worked really well and we look forward to expanding this for our September Fayre.

Updates in and around the building

Dog-friendly Coffee Shop

We're really excited to announce that our café The Old Union Coffee Shop on North Street is now Dog-Friendly! It’s something that we know a lot of students will love but also some students may not feel comfortable with, so Rector’s Café will remain a dog-free zone and we've added a feedback link onto all publicity: yourunion.net/feedback

Music in The Union

We know many students use the Union for lots of different reasons.  We work really hard to allow as many student groups as physically possible to use all our spaces within the Union.

This year the Union has been trying to use our various venues to showcase St Andrews music talents, for example, Sandy's Bar is a great venue for smaller events, with student DJs (no matter their style) every Tuesday and STAR, a Union Subcommittee host brilliant live-gigs for Sounds of Sandy's every Saturday. Student societies and groups are more than welcome to reach out at any time for help putting on any kind of event they may want, for example, we see much success on Thursdays with student-led Union events such as Rocksoc’s fortnightly Club Night in Sandy's and Jazzworks Jams in The Main Bar.

We’ve also worked hard to bring a twist to Friday nights this coming semester and are confident we’ve got themes to fit everyone’s taste in music PLUS there are amazing prizes to be won!  Check out our Semester 2 themes at yourunion.net/bop or follow @yourunionevents on Facebook for updates.

Societies and Activities

Race2 Valencia

Race2, a subsidiary of our Subcommittee The Charities Campaign organised the Race to Valencia event incredibly well, with every last detail covered.  Not only that but they have raised an astonishing £50k+ so far! This amazing amount of money will be going to their three nominated charities: The Yard, The CALMzone & Women for Women International.

Mermaids Christmas Ball

Mermaids Christmas Ball took place on the 1st December in its regular venue - Kinkell Byre.  Tickets sold out in the usual record time – within a few minutes.  The Union’s Bars' team did a fantastic job of the bar.

Word Bank

Before Christmas we asked students to complete our annual survey.  One question asked them to describe the Union in one word.  The word bank below shows the most popular words they chose.

We have a strong and vibrant record of student democracy. We are the only UK Students' Union to have exceeded over 50% turnout in our elections.  Find out more here: yourunion.net/elections.
