We are writing to inform you of the upcoming staff strikes, which are occurring as a result of a decision by the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) to make changes to its pension scheme, which were on 23 January 2018.
University and College Union (UCU) has secured a local mandate to take industrial action in two forms. Only staff who are members of UCU are eligible to take action. What this means to you as a student is the following:
- Action short of a strike: This action will take effect from 22 February 2018 and will terminate no later than 19 June 2018. This involves staff working to contract; not covering for absent colleagues; not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action and not undertaking voluntary activities. When taking action short of a strike, staff must conduct any duties normally associated with their role within the University, which includes teaching, PhD supervision, carrying out assessments, marking, and examinations. Action short of a strike would therefore have little impact on teaching.
- Strike Action: This action will take place on 22, 23, 26, 27, 28 February 2018; 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 March 2018. On these dates staff members taking strike action would not work to their contract. This will potentially affect classes and assessments.
At present, within the Students’ Association, our priority is to alleviate the impact of strike action on you education, and to keep students informed of how this will affect them. We completely respect the strike action that is taking place, and the decision to dispute a fundamental change to such an important matter as pensions. Zachary has been working with your elected School Presidents to bring them up to speed with the current situation and many of them have organised information events with their Schools for students to attend.
Please feel free to reach out to either myself (president@) or Zachary (doed@) with any questions you may have,
Director of Education
