Your role
The University of St Andrews has a well-developed and active system of student representation for undergraduate students. The representation system for postgraduate students does not benefit from the same active engagement and the success of the system relies heavily on the initiative of individual students fulfilling the role in a particular year. The current Postgraduate Academic Convenor conducted a survey of postgraduate representatives, School presidents, and Directors of Postgraduate Studies in Summer 2020 to gather impressions about the current postgraduate representation system. We are recruiting two interns to build on that report and gather additional evidence to support and enhance the recommendations.
The interns will investigate other systems for postgraduate representation in the UK and beyond. They will be asked to identify institutions which have a promising system and then reach out to individuals involved in the system to get a first-hand account of how the system works in practice. One intern will be asked to think particularly about recruiting and rewarding postgraduate representatives while the other will consider the types of training and support that should be provided to postgraduate representatives.
At the end of the internship a report is expected which will build on the initial report from the PG Academic Convenor, summarise findings, and make practical recommendations for changes to the postgraduate representation system.
