As a subcommittee of the Students’ Association, all matriculated postgraduate students, both taught and research, are automatically members of the Postgraduate Society. Our job is threefold; we deal with postgraduate academic representation, student wellbeing and social event organisation.

For the academic year 2020/21, the Postgraduate Society is led by Sam Ross, our Postgraduate President, who often oversees the organising of events. The Postgraduate Academic Convenor, Abi Whitefield, deals with your academic representation.

We also work closely together with St Leonard’s College, the home for all postgraduates. We organise events ranging from whisky tastings, ceilidhs to bus trips and balls through the Postgraduate Society Committee. PG students and new members are welcome to join and bring in new ideas about what the Postgraduate Society can offer to the postgraduate community. During the Covid-19 situation, we'll be holding a variety of online events which can be found on our Facebook page

The Postgraduate Society is here to provide a great time for postgrads in St Andrews, whether you’re here for a Masters or a PhD, we hope to welcome every one of you at our events.

Postgraduate Society President – Sam Ross (

Hey, I'm Sam! I'm a first year PhD student looking at followership and leadership, and having arrived in St Andrews in 2015, I'm pretty sure I'll never leave. I'm here to oversee all the events hosted by the Postgraduate Society, as well as field and redirect or resolve any and all postgraduate enquiries you have. I am a newbie runner who loves coffee and yoga, but most of all, a good stomp up and down West Sands.

Postgraduate Academic Convenor – Abi Whitefield (

I'm Abi and I'm the PG Academic Convenor this year. I'm a second year PhD student in Geography. I'm here to help ensure that postgraduate voices are heard in all levels of academic decision making at the university!
