Women for Women International is a charity that, since 1993, has worked with over 500,000 marginalised women in post-war countries in order to support them and give them the opportunities to better their lives.
Women affected by conflict experience sexual violence, poverty and inequality, with access to education, economic resources, and decision making usually denied. Women for Women International support these women through their year-long training programmes which focus on four key areas: earnings and savings; rights and decision making; health and wellness; and building support networks.
Through this, these women are then able to provide for their families, set up businesses, choose their own futures and better understand their worth. We as a society passionately believe in this cause, and throughout the year we work hard in order to raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity.
We hold bake sales, pub socials and quiz nights, as well as collaborating with other societies. In the last two years we've held a 'St Andrews Bake Off' event, and we furthermore have the annual 'Women in the Arts' Showcase which highlights all the incredible female talent of our town.
This year we were voted to be the Union's International Charity for 2019/2020, and as a society we are proud to currently sponsor 7 women on the training programme, having sponsored over 100 since we began in 2012. Exchanging letters with our sisters is definitely the most rewarding part of being involved in the society, and though the current pandemic will no doubt make it harder to hold fundraising events this year, we are determined to adapt and continue supporting the charity as much as we can.
We are a friendly, inclusive and passionate group, and excited to welcome new members this year!
