2. Tactics

These are the different types of actions you’ll take as part of your campaign to reach your overall aim, smaller specific goals, and/or raising awareness of your campaign in general. Not all of the following will be relevant, and the best tactics will depend on your preferences, aims & goals, audience, and time available to you:

Protests, marches, and boycotts amazing ways to make a statement and draw attention to the issue you are campaigning about. However, we advise you in all of your tactics to escalate, rather than starting at the most intense or serious method. If you start with a protest/march, there is nowhere you can really dial up to. It gives your campaign more momentum if you start with ‘smaller’ actions, and build up from there. For example, your sequence of tactics could be:

  1. Social media campaign
  2. Event (e.g. speaker panel, craft event)
  3. Open letter
  4. Lobbying staff/elected officials
  5. Protest/march

In your planning, consider routes to escalation, as well as how to build support and momentum as you progress through your campaign.
