Saints LGBT+ is a social and welfare group dedicated to providing an open and safe environment for people in the LGBT+ community, and allies, within St Andrews. As we are an Association subcommittee you are automatically a member, and everyone is welcome at any of our events, regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity.
At Saints LGBT+, the committee is split into two halves, with the first being our passionate social team, headed up by Joanna Bowman. The dedicated and enthusiastic social team are there to organise events throughout the year to help you make the most of your St Andrews experience! Our socials range from monthly take-overs of Club 601, to film nights, shows, bonfires, and much more! Keep an eye out for the sell-out club night, DRAG WALK in February, and the explosive GLITTERBALL in March, both of which will be bigger, better, and shinier than ever! Our socials are really great ways to meet other LGBT+ individuals, and socialise and bond with people with similar life experiences and ideologies as you! People often make their best friends at our socials, and it’s a great way to meet new academic parents!
We also understand that University isn’t always fun and games, so we have an incredible welfare team, headed by Bernie Munro, dedicated to bringing you a diverse range of educational and supportive events, such as our St Andrews PRIDE parade, speaker seminars, sexual health workshops, and outreach schemes. Keep an eye out for us in front of the Union, where we’ll have stalls marking important days in the LGBT+ calendar, like National Coming Out Day, and World AIDS Day.
University can be an incredibly fun, but also an incredibly stressful time; moving away from family, settling in a new environment, and coming to terms with gender or sexual identity are all events that may cause stress and worry at University, and we want to help you through these challenges as they arise. Please feel free to approach any member of the committee at any time, and we’ll guide you through as best as we can.
We also offer a few services to help you through these difficult times. The committee manages an Anonymous Email service, (saintslgbtwelfare@), that you can email at absolutely any time, for a conversation about anything you may be struggling with. The service is operated by anonymous monitors that aren’t directly associated with the committee, and your email is automatically hidden by computer software, so your identity is 100% hidden and secure, and you can be confident that you can discuss any issues in a completely anonymous forum with a trained listener.
Alternatively, if you’d like to see us in person, come along to one of our twice-monthly welfare drop in sessions, or just give us a shout! All of your committee members are listed on our website (www.saintslgbt.com); feel free to drop one of them an email! We also understand that, sometimes, coming to your first LGBT+ event can be very challenging, so we’re more than happy to meet up with you at the event, or prearrange something, so that you know you won’t be alone when you arrive! All of your committee members will also be clearly marked out, either with a committee t-shirt or lanyard, so feel free to approach them for a chat at any point during the events. The committee are all incredibly lovely and approachable – please do make use of them if you feel the need! We’re here to support you!
At the end of the day, Saints LGBT+ is an incredible group, and we hope that you interact with us and discover this for yourself too! We’d love nothing more than to make your University experience as amazing as it possibly can be! To find out more, check out our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or drop us a message. We look forward to seeing you soon!
