Since 1970, the Rector has appointed a student as Rector's Assessor. This is a voluntary position, responsible for acting as a link between the Rector and the student body. The Assessor also provides aid and advice to the Rector and sits on the University Court as a full member. The Assessor meets regularly with the Rector to advise on policy issues, discuss upcoming events and campaigns, and ensure the Rector has a coordinated media and web presence in St Andrews.

In August 2025, the Rector invited former Director of Education and Association President, Cam Brown, to be her  Rector's Assessor for 2025/26. Academic Year This was confirmed by the University Court in October 2025.

About the Rector's Assessor

The Rector’s Assessor is a student appointed by the Rector of the University of St Andrews to support the Rector and lead the Rector’s Committee, a team of students dedicated to improving and reporting upon the diverse student experiences in St Andrews. The Assessor and the Committee work together to help implement the Rector’s vision for change in St Andrews. The Assessor sits on University Court, as a full member, alongside the Rector.

How the Rector Assessor Affects You

The position of Rector’s Assessor is important due to the way in which the role links the student body, Your Union, the University Court, the Rector’s Committee, and the Rector. As a student representative, the Assessor and their Committee answer first and foremost to the needs of students, and work hand in glove with the Students' Assocation to ensure all students are fairly consulted and considered in the University’s decision-making processes.

A core element of accurately representing the student body at the highest governing level of the University is regular and comprehensive consultation, as well as co-creation of initiatives with students.

Groups the Rector’s Committee works with

The Rector, Rector’s Assessor, and Rector’s Committee work very closely with a variety of groups and initiatives. The Committee collaborates with Your Union, Your Exec Team, subcommittees, societies, University staff, and individuals to address the various key issues that need to be resolved.
