Estranged and Care-Experienced Students Network
About the Position
Hi I’m Lucy, your current estranged and care experienced student officer
I’m here to advocate for and represent care-experienced and estranged students, alongside the rest of the EaCES St Andrews committee who are brilliant representatives.
We hold lots of events during the year and are always planning new ones. Our Instagram is: @eaces.sta https://www.instagram.com/eaces.sta/?hl=en – follow us for event updates and EaCES-specific information!
Beyond our ‘social side’, we are also working on other projects with the university and other networks to improve access, experience and representation for estranged and care-experienced students at St Andrews.
Some key definitions:
Care-experienced refers to anyone who has been supported by the care system at any point in their life.
This includes experience of:
• Foster care
• Residential/group homes
• Kinship care (living with relatives)
• Being under a Special guardianship order
• Adoption
• Supported or semi-independent accommodation
• Being looked after at home with social worker involvement
Estranged students are those who have little-no contact with their parents or guardians. This may be due to family breakdown, safety concerns, or other complex circumstances such as being separated from your family as a refugee.
As a network, we are very flexible about definitions and acknowledge that the reality is often more complicated than those set out by for example government guidelines on estrangement for student finance. We welcome everyone.
Our committee shared email is: [email protected] but you’d also be more than welcome to email me personally at [email protected]
