We are looking for Society Cluster Liaisons and Executive General Members to join the Student Opportunities Department. Volunteers will form part of student representation, working alongside the President and Vice Presidents of Student Opportunities.

What is the Student Opportunities Department?

The department forms part of the wider Student Engagement team at the Union. We look after all things societies, activities, volunteering, and employability.

Society Liaisons

Liaisons are the direct link from a cluster of societies to the Union. They will work with the committees of around 10-15 societies in a category such as hobbies and lifestyle or culture and faith. Liaisons will act as a guide to societies, helping them with activities such as re-affiliation, EGMs, and events.  

Essential requirements

• A personable individual, who can communicate effectively with individuals and groups
• In good standing order with the Student’s Association and University
• Not currently in office as a President of a society 
• Committed and able to prioritise 
• Efficient time management 
• Attend a monthly Round Table to discuss issues and practices 
• Able to undertake a 2 hour in-person training at the beginning of each semester 

Preferred

• Experience on a society committee
• Proficient with Microsoft 365 and Outlook
• Experience in student voice, leadership or similar roles

Detailed Job Description

• Attend a one-to-one catchup once per month with the President of Student Opportunities and/or Vice President of Student Opportunities (Societies)
• Communicate with every society in your cluster at least once per semester
• Attend society committee meetings and AGMs where necessary, given permission
•  Discover good practice within society committees and share to others where appropriate
• Attend and contribute to the monthly Society and Activities Round Table with other Liaisons and members of the Union’s Society and Activities Team
• Collaborate with committees, ensuring that liaison activities focus on the society committee members, rather than the society general members. 
• Understand the process of Risk Assessing, and advise societies on producing a Risk Assessment for their activities (training provided)
• Sign-post society committees to Union and external resources when requested
• Understand the process of re-affiliation and assist societies through the process (training provided)
• Complete accessibility training and advise societies on best practices

• Outdoors, Physical Activity and Animals,
• Political and Campaigning,
• Science and Maths (Academic)

• Create a small speech as to why you should be a society liaison.
• Attend the Opportunities Forum on Monday 21st September at 7pm, read your speech to the attendees.
• Attendees will vote on the liaison for each society cluster.
