The Lion and The Moon. A name steeped in history. Drawn from the University’s ancient coat of arms, this name brings together powerful symbols:
The crescent moon, tied to Pope Benedict XIII
The lion rampant, a proud emblem from Scotland’s Royal Arms
The gold diamonds are from the personal arms of Bishop Wardlaw 
The apple tree, and the boar —represent knowledge and the town itself.

The Red Gown. Iconic. Instantly recognisable. Deeply loved. The red gown is one of the most famous traditions at St Andrews, worn with pride by generations of students. Originally introduced centuries ago (to keep underage students out of pubs!), it remains a defining symbol of student life today — worn differently as you progress through your years.
