Swing Dance

Did you mean: List of Societies?

An inclusive community for swing dancers of all levels, with weekly classes, practice sessions, and socials.

Swing Dance is a family of African-American Vernacular Dances that developed in Black communities, most notably in Harlem and Charleston, alongside the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s to 1940s. Dances such as Lindy Hop, Charleston and Solo Jazz celebrate the expression of lived experiences and are foundational to the majority of American dance styles.

Today, our society is one of a multitude of international communities celebrating this improvised, expressive, and playful dance form. We offer weekly classes open to all levels, from complete beginners to more experienced dancers (no partner needed), to help build a vocabulary of moves that can be used in social improvisation. In addition, we have regular practice socials, and other non-dance events to enjoy!

Do you feel like you can't dance? Swing challenges us to forget internalised notions of right and wrong and instead encourages us to focus on expressing our playfulness and grounding ourselves with a full-body presence in the rhythm. Dance is about feeling safe within yourself but also connecting with other people around you to create an environment where everyone fits together.

We hold weekly socials and practice sessions that hold true to the spirit of swing: sharing lively, impromptu dances with new and old friends, in a space where people can be their authentic selves.
