Member for First Years

Hello! My name is Hyewon and I’m your Member for First Years.

Hello! My name is Hyewon and I’m your Member for First Years.

My name is Hyewon, pronounced hey1, and I am your Member for First Years.

I am originally from Chicago and currently living in Tokyo. As an international student from 9,000 km away with different school terms compared to the UK, I did not have the opportunity to visit St Andrews before September. Although I was extremely excited to study in St Andrews and live in the small town for the first time in my life, I was worried about various things. Once I arrived at St Andrews, I soon realised that numerous freshers had the same questions that I had before starting the university. As approximately 40% of the student population at our university are from outside of the UK and not everyone has the chance to visit St Andrews before they start the university, I wanted to be a help for the incoming first years from all over the world. Hence, I am a Senior Student Ambassador giving tours around the town and halls during the Visiting Days. In order to widen the scope of my involvement in helping the incoming first years, I decided to run for the Member for First Years position.

Thanks to all the St Andreans who participated in the election, I was elected as the Member for First Years this year. I sit on the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and also part of the Societies Committee within the Union. My role is to prepare incoming first years for the Freshers’ Week and help them to have a smooth transition as a St Andrews’ student throughout the year. I aim to increase the involvement of first years in our numerous unique and entertaining societies that we have at our university. As the student life in St Andrews is one of its kind, I hope to address the first year students’ concerns throughout the year and ensure to have their voices heard to increase the satisfaction of student experience.

If you are an incoming first year student who has questions or concerns regarding accommodation, visa processes or even Raisin Monday, please feel free to contact me via email (hh55@), Facebook or in person anytime throughout the year. Not only the first years but if any of you guys have questions please contact me and I will help you to the best of my ability. I would love to hear from all of you!

Thank you.
