Christmas ... ??
Refreshers ... ??
LOTS of external bars ...  ??

Staff have been busy and don’t we know it.  Refreshers' Week photos can be found here and there are some great photos from the Refreshers’ Fair too. As always thank you to everyone for their hard work so far this semester.

Our short survey we carried out before the festive break came back with some really lovely feedback.  Here’s a few of our favourites we wanted to pass on:

“I like the diversity of space and entertainment it provides, it can go from coffee in the morning, meet up with my society in one of the meeting rooms, and finish the night in main bar or 601.”

“All the amazing stuff that is going on in there. Whenever I'm in the building for meetings or to study, there is always a nice tune to catch on your way or some random rehearsal going on!”

“It is accessible to students and doesn't feel intimidating- this atmosphere much helped by the staff and students there who understand the uni life and just want to be nice!”

“The extremely friendly and helpful staff. Also the atmosphere throughout the day at the main bar, it’s not terrifyingly quiet, but still maintains an atmosphere which pushes you to do some work”

“The people! Everyone from the receptionists to the bar staff to the technicians are friendly and always willing to help.”
“I really enjoy the vibe of Rector's cafe because the staff is friendly and it's a great place to study and have tea”

These comments made us really happy and we hope they brighten up your day too.

News

Services:

St Patricks day has always fallen rather inconveniently for us as Spring break means a lot of students are either planning on heading away or already away   However after our very successful Winter Wonderland and very positive feedback in our survey about all building events we thought we would give an all building St Patricks party a go. Full event details about tonights event can be found here

Representation:

Elections have been and gone for another year.  The Sabbaticals did a fantastic job of keeping the elections hype up and engaging students.  We stopped our downward trend by increasing turnout by 1%.  Photos and films about elections and the opportunities available to students can be found here: Association Elections Facebook page .

Societies and Activities:

Race2, the annual charity hitchhike started at 5am on the 18th of January. It saw over 200 students attempting to hitchhike from St. Andrews to Barcelona by hitching cars or asking for train tickets and hostel rooms, the participants had to be creative to make their way across Europe!

So far, Race2Barcelona has raised over £35,000 for the students’ Charities Campaign’s nominated charities for 2017/18 which are Families First, The Scottish Refugee Council and Save the Children. The below picture show the Sabbs in Barcelona supporting the students who made it!

The Careers Centre and the Students' Association teamed up in February to present the first ever Creative Industries Career Pathways event. It was held in Club 601 and The Stage and hosted a variety of organisations including: Engage, MVF, Prepress Projects and The National Trust for Scotland. There was also a presentation from Sarah Conner, an editor/producer for BBC Blue Planet 2. Sarah graduated from St Andrews in 2004 and has since built an extensive career specialising in natural history, science and adventure programme making.

Updates in and around the building:

Free Fruit Friday

Free fruit Friday is now a thing! As part of the sabbaticals continued engagement with students and to increase student awareness of the sabbs they have been handing fruit out around the building.  If the scheme remains successful we will continue to run it on a weekly basis.

Staff Survey

The annual staff survey is now live: please take a moment to let us know what you think about working in the Association. The survey will be open until 25th March. Your views continue to be very important: these results inform our policies and procedures. The results are anonymous and used only to help us attain our continued goal of being a good employer for all our staff.

You can complete the survey by clicking on the bowl image or as usual paper copies are available at Reception if you prefer to complete the survey this way.
