Sexual Orientation

Some useful terms:

  • Bisexual: A person who is attracted towards same and/or different genders
  • Gay: A person who is attracted towards their own gender, most commonly used for men.
  • Heterosexual/Straight: A person who is attracted towards the opposite gender
  • Lesbian: A woman who is attracted to other women
  • Pansexual: A person who is attracted to others is not limited by biological sex, gender or gender identity.
  • Queer: An umbrella term which embraces a variety of orientations of those who are not among the exclusively heterosexual. This term was once considered a derogatory term and although the younger generation has begun to reclaim it, do not use this term to describe someone unless they say it’s okay.
  • Asexual: A person who does not experience sexual attraction. Furthermore, asexuality is a spectrum and just because a person is asexual does not mean they are aromantic.

It's important to note that sexual orientation does not always match romantic orientation and some people may fit under the aromantic spectrum. Sexuality can be fluid and it’s okay to experiment with labels and test out what feels best for you.
