The annual student-led Teaching Awards generate hundreds of nominations, in which students commend staff for their excellent teaching. The intern will analyse the qualitative responses to the nominations, in order to identify trends, examples, and good practice in learning and teaching. The intern will generate a report highlighting what students consider to be “excellent teaching”. The report will be used to create recommendations to the university and to academic representatives to improve learning and teaching based on positive student feedback. The intern will present findings to audiences within the Students’ Association and key University stakeholders, such as members of the Proctor’s Office.

This project, entitled, “What Do Students Consider Excellent Teaching?” is funded by the Enhancement Themes, which aim to aim to improve the student learning experience by generating new ideas and fostering collaboration between students and staff.

About the Teaching Awards

Each year, students are given the opportunity to commend the outstanding staff members who have shaped their university experiences through the Teaching Awards. These awards are entirely student owned; elected student leaders choose the award categories, set the criteria, shortlist, and select the winners of the awards. Students are the only members of the university community who are eligible to submit nominations. The Students’ Association has run student-led Teaching Awards since 2009/10. More information about the awards, including the categories and winners, can be found on the Association website.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities of Post-holder

  1. Analyse the Students’ Association Teaching Award nominations, a data pool with over 300 entries of qualitative submissions.
  2. Search for themes, trends, practices, and recommendations among the nominations.
  3. Construct a report outlining what students have identified as “excellent teaching” at the University and faculty levels; if time allows, the project will also involve School/department level analysis.
  4. Conduct any additional external or comparative research deemed necessary to inform the report.
  5. Collaborate with elected student leaders to make recommendations based on report findings.
  6. Present report and recommendations to key stakeholders within the Students’ Association and University.
  7. Time and resources permitting, the intern may also be asked to analyse other data, such as previous years’ Teaching Award nominations.
