7.30pm, Thursday 30th November, Younger Hall
The Music Society’s flagship ensemble invites you to an evening of
orchestral music this St Andrew’s Day. Under the direction of Chris
George (former leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra) the orchestra
will fittingly begin with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture, a colourful
work inspired by the composer’s 1829 visit to Scotland. The orchestra
will then welcome back the brilliant Christian Elliot (Principal
Cellist of the Irish Chamber Orchestra and former Guest Principal of
the SCO, the BBC Philharmonic and the RSNO) to perform Elgar’s Cello
Concerto. The programme concludes with two
vivid and awe-inspiring Russian works: Mussorgsky’s Night on the Bare
Mountain and Stravinsky’s Firebird (1919 concert suite).
