In essence, RockSoc is the home of all things alternative in St Andrews. If you’re interested in music from anywhere and everywhere across the rock and metal spectrum, and/or alternative art, literature, and culture, we're your people!
Our origin and traditions
We started out back in 1991 as a small group of friends brought together by a love of music, and we’ve been rockin’ ever since! As we’re one of St Andrews’ oldest societies, we’ve accrued several traditions that we like to keep going, such as...
· A wee pub get-together on the Sunday at the end of Freshers’ Week
· Pumpkin carving, followed by a club night, to mark Halloween
· A yearly charity fundraiser in Semester 2 (most recently we fundraised for Music in Hospitals and Care Scotland)
· A bonfire for May Dip, complete with rock music and lots of snacks
· A committee meal to mark the end of the year
As well as these, we’ve got loads to keep you busy throughout the academic year. Below are some of the types of events you can expect to see from us...
What we do
At least once a fortnight, typically on Thursdays, we take over Sandy’s Bar to put on a rock and metal club night. We embrace lots of different themes (Women of Rock, Big 4 & Friends, and Emo vs Indie to name a few) and each night features 3-4 DJs - RockSoc members past and present with all kinds of different tastes in music. We’re always looking for awesome new DJs so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you want to find out how!
One aspect of our club nights that never changes is how fun, friendly and welcoming they are. You’ll see headbanging, dancing, as well as lots of people just chilling with a drink, so fear not if dancing’s not your thing. Plus, these events are almost always completely FREE to attend. What better excuse to get yourself out and about on a Thursday night?
As per tradition (we’re creatures of habit, in case you couldn’t tell) we have at least one pub quiz a semester. You’ll put your musical knowledge (or lack thereof) to the test in several themed rounds, in the aim of getting your hands on a selection of awesome prizes. Even better, if you’re lucky enough to
come in last place, you'll be bestowed with the time-honoured gift of a wooden spoon. Afterwards we usually put on a wee club night, or just have a natter with a couple of drinks and listen to some music.
Contrary to popular belief, we’re not nocturnal! At various points throughout the year you can expect to join us for coffee, board games and artsy activities during the day. If we’re extra lucky, some of our old friends – our lovely alumni from years past – might stop by to pay us a visit, too.
Our society has a passion for live music, whether that’s listening to or playing it. If you’re interested in getting a band together, look out for our band finding events where we’ll do our best to match you with equally eager musicians. We’ll also have jam sessions open to everyone, irrespective of musical ability or experience. And for those wanting something a wee bit more informal, we’ll have karaoke, singstar and guitar hero sessions where you can live your rock star dream without the pressure.
Not only that, but we’re also working hard on bringing bands from Scotland and beyond to St Andrews to put on a show. The Facebook page is the best place to go for up to date information on this as and when we can share it, but we promise there’s great stuff coming your way very soon...
You’re also very much encouraged to join our Community Group (see resources below!) – this is a place where we’ll organise informal events, share new music, and talk about anything and everything. You can also use our community group to find people to go to gigs, pres, festivals, and any other meet-ups during the year!
There’s something really special about getting cosy around a fire listening to your favourite music. We’ll have bonfires during Freshers and May Dip, but don’t be surprised to see them popping up at various other points during the year.
Starting in 2019, we’re going to be putting on monthly film nights. Expect Tim Burton, horror movies, and so-bad-it's-good band documentaries, among much more. Your suggestions are always welcome so just let us know if there’s something you wanna watch with us.
We have our very own radio show! Every week during term time, you can tune in to listen to the latest news in rock and metal and lots of great music. Make sure to like RockSTAR on Facebook to find out when we’ll be airing.
The RockSoc committee are responsible for all of the organisation for the society and its events. We're all passionate RockSoc enthusiasts who want to make sure it's a fun, welcoming place for everyone!
We typically have two General Meetings where we elect new committee members. Our EGM takes place in October and is the best opportunity for our new members to join the committee! At this Meeting we'll elect our Members' Representative, whose role is to get feedback from members and to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure our society is awesome for everyone. All members can run for the role but we particularly encourage Freshers to get involved! Our AGM takes place towards the end of each academic year, where all of our committee for the next academic year are chosen. Traditionally, both the old and new committee work together on preparations for our May Dip bonfire, and we all go for a meal at Ziggy's to celebrate the end of the academic year.
Below are the names and roles of the lovely folk on our committee for 2019/20 - you're more than welcome to get in touch with any of us with questions, ideas, or simply to get to know us! We're also more than happy to meet up with you and go to our events together if you're nervous or just want a few friendly faces to show up with - we're sure you'll feel at home in no time.
