Investment

The University of St Andrews Investment Society exists to offer students opportunities to develop their interest in business and finance.

 The Investment Society

Founded in 2012, The Investment Society serves as an interactive education and networking tool, with a primary focus of allowing students a platform to advance their interest in banking, investment management, research and more. By building a dynamic platform for our members to develop professional skills, we aspire to continue be one of the United Kingdom’s most reputable student investment societies. Having won Best Society Award at the University Societies Awards for two consecutive years and previously receiving Best New Society 2012-13, we are now one of the largest student organisations on campus with over 2000 students signed up to our mailing list and 400 paid members.

Aims and objectives

Educational talks:

We host multiple educational speaker events each semester with the aim of creating an inspirational and motivational environment during which our members can gain the opportunity to build upon their accumulating financial knowledge. The main objective of the talks is to tailor our presentations to the interests of our members and focus on unfamiliar areas. The talks are designed so that they are accessible to members who come from of all academic disciplines as we aspire to be as inclusive as possible.

CV Workshops:

One of the unique aspects of our society is that we give members the opportunity to get their CV’s reviewed by St Andrews Career Advisors and leading experts in the financial industry. We will also go through different templates and example CV’s to ensure that our members will have a CV that will stand out to potential recruiters.

Analyst training, investing and our fund:

Our members will be assigned to one of the six sector groups. Within each sector there is a sector head who will communicate within the group to organise weekly meetings and delegate research tasks on different potential stocks. The aim of the weekly meetings is to give our analysts training in the basics of financial evaluation and investing. At the end of every semester students within each sector get the opportunity to pitch a stock to the rest of the society as part of a hands-on learning approach. The stocks constitute the foundation of our fund and proceeds of which are given to our chosen charity to help the local community. Our fund is a real money long equity fund with a portfolio value of £17 700.

Working to help the local community:

Money made from our investment fund is used to make donations to local charities. This year we donated £500 to the charity Fife Gingerbread which works with single parents in need across the East Coast of Scotland. This allows us to give back to the local community and gives our members a sense of pride in the fact they are learning and gaining experience in investing whilst giving back to the local community.
