Hello! We are the University of St Andrews Opera Society.
Now entering our fifth year, OpSoc is dedicated to sharing our passion for opera with the St Andrews community in a way that is accessible and fun.
We stage two large, fully dramatized and orchestrated productions in The Byre Theatre every year. In the past, these have included Orpheus in the Underworld, The Marriage of Figaro and, most recently, The Magic Flute. On top of these, we also have various concert series throughout the year, which often includes recitals in the beautiful setting of St Salvator’s Chapel and boozy cocktail evenings with some operatic entertainment.
These events not only bring together singers, but directors, producers, musicians, set and costume designers, marketing gurus – there’s opportunities for everyone to get involved.
Unlike other opera companies who often perform in Italian, German, Russian etc., all of our performances are in English. We believe this makes our productions more accessible for audiences and for those looking to get involved.
We are an incredibly sociable society, and as well as our regular rehearsals, we host a variety of gatherings and events every fortnight. These include pub meets, coffee and cake, quizzes, and parties, as well as our popular annual Christmas Lunch and Summer Pimm’s Picnic.
There is no requirement to have any prior training or experience – we hope to welcome singers from all backgrounds to our family, as well as musicians, directors, designers, and all opera enthusiasts.
