About the Position

Callum Irvine, YOUR Postgraduate Research President, ensures PGRs feel welcome and represented in St Andrews and make the most of their time at the University.

Specifically, the Postgraduate Research President:

  • Represents postgraduate research students in academic matters.
  • Line-manages the Postgraduate Research and EDI Officers.
  • Trains the aboveofficers and regularly update training for PGR Course Representatives.
  • Publicises PGR Elections and answer queries.
  • Updates the PGR Academic section of the Association website.
  • Is the postgraduate student member on the Academic Senate, Postgraduate Group, Postgraduate Research Committee, Academic Monitoring Group, and Research Impact and Innovation Committee.
  • Attends PGR Forum.
  • Attends or delegate representatives to other committees and working groups as invited to represent postgraduate students.
  • Sits on the Education Executive Committee, and Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
  • Attends the Education Committee and/or Undergraduate Academic Forum when requested.
  • Updates Postgraduate Research Representatives on issues affecting the postgraduate community.
  • Writes emails to the whole postgraduate community to inform them of relevant updates.
  • Liaises with the Provost's Office about postgraduate research academic issues.
  • Liaises with the DoEd, School Presidents, other elected officers, and St Leonard's College.
  • Liaises with the Academic Representation Coordinator to produce resources for Reps and the PGR community.

Note on Eligibility: Only postgraduate students matriculated for the full term of office may run for this role during the Association Elections.

Role holders take office in October and end their term the following September. On average, the Postgraduate Research President spends between 5 and 10 hours per week on their role.

In 2023 the role of Postgraduate Academic officer was split into two roles, the Postgraduate Research President and the Postgraduate Taught President.
