Beginning in Week 5 of the 2014-15 academic year, Main Library operating hours will be permanently extended, opening 7 days a week, 8am-2am, during term time. 

This improvement stands as a significant achievement for student representation within the University. Early last year, the Student’s Association initiated a discussion with library management in order to meet the overwhelming demand for enhanced study spaces.

With robust support from School Presidents and Class Representatives, the Association launched the Student Library Survey in November of 2013. Feedback from this survey was well received by library management, prompting the successful renegotiation of staff contracts and attainment of additional funding from the University administration. 

Director of Representation, Ondrej Hajda, who most recently spearheaded the effort said, “I would like to thank everyone involved in the negotiations - from our Class Representatives, School Presidents, and SRC members, to the Library, Estates and other University staff - for being dedicated to continuous improvement of the St Andrews student experience.”

The Students’ Association believes that these improvements, in conjunction with the opening of a new area in the Gateway Building later in Semester 1, will help curtail the acute pressures on study spaces faced by the students of St Andrews. However, the Association will maintain its steadfast commitment to the student experience in advocating for continual advancements in the quality and quantity of study spaces.
