town-gown relations
SRC Community Relations Officer
For such a small University and town, St Andrews has such a lot going on in it. Both 'Town' and 'Gown' hold numerous events and fairs throughout the year. Of course, since the University exists right in the heart of the town and many students live in it, this can sometimes lead to friction.
For this reason, there is student representation on the several community groups, for example, The Town-Gown Liaison Group and the Community Council, both of which meet relatively frequently and discuss any issues affecting the local community from noise complaints, to seagulls. By working together with these groups, the Students' Association helps to represent students' views and to counter-act notions of students as being irresponsible or inconsiderate.
By doing so, we protect the diversity of events that students are allowed to organise during the year - everything from Starfields to the Union's late opening hours. In this role there are a huge variety of campaigns you can get involved with - previous years have seen campaigns on bike lights, noise pollution late at night, and changes to HMO licenses affecting students in private flats.
You will also work with student societies such as STAR radio, Mermaids, Charities and Student Volunteering Service on collaborative community events, and will liaise with the local press such as the editor of St Andrews in Focus magazine.
The following position is up for election on 16.03.2012. If you have any questions get in touch on community.relations@st-andrews.ac.uk.
