Athletic Union

The Athletic Union is the umbrella organisation for the support and development of University sport. It's run by students, for students, providing structure and advice to the 60 affiliated sports clubs and well over 3,500 members.

As a student volunteer on the AU Executive, you will be expected to aid and assist the permanent staff in the roles, along with taking some of the more minor, but no less important, tasks on. These tasks will normally be administrative, but the strategic role of the volunteer exec is just as valued. The volunteer Exec will sit on the overall AU Executive Committee which should convene at the very minimum once a fortnight.

With much of the administrative work also needing to take place in the AU offices, contact time with the permanent members of staff by being down in the office and on a regular basis should be of paramount importance. This not only allows the volunteers a chance to keep up to date with what is happening centrally, but also allows the permanent members of staff access to a wider variety of student clubs from which to gain opinions. Whilst there are basic job specs and responsibilities for each of the student Exec members, they are also expected to use initiative in implementing any additional projects that may be of benefit to University sport.

Ultimately the volunteer Exec is there to help the AU in its core goals – namely to provide the widest possible variety of sport, and to ensure that this provision is of the highest standard through all aspects of sport. It must also ensure a smooth handover throughout the elections and following handover periods.
