► Environment & Ethics

environment and ethics

The Union's green team exists to represent the environmental and ethical concerns and principles of students. In the Union, in halls, in private flats and in the wider world, the team works to ensure that environmental and ethical concerns are at the top of any agenda.

The team meets once every week, and Sustainability Officer reports to the Students' Representative Council every fortnight. They are also a member of the Student Services Committee.

The following position is up for election on 16.03.2012:

Association Environment & Ethics Officer

As the main person responsible for ensuring that the University's broader strategic direction and current practise is sustainable and ethical, you will represent student concerns for the environment both on the SRC and SSC.

As the chair of the Environment and ethics committee it will be up to you to organise regular meetings with key parties such as the sabbaticals, the University Estates department, and relevant student groups such as Transition and Sustainable Development Society. You will also have control over the annual publication of the Green Guide for incoming students, and will be invited to key University meetings on issues like Fair Trade policy and sustainable investment.

You will also be the key point of contact for halls of residence, organising the annual Inter Hall Energy Competition, and recruiting and training volunteers in the halls of residents to act as their environmental rep.

One of your main projects will be to organise the Students' Association's annual Green Week. This can be directed and branded however you like, with the ultimate aim of making the wider student body aware of green issues and how to live more sustainably in St Andrews. This can include events from ethical fashion shows, to talks from guest speakers such as the head of Oxfam Scotland, to jewellry making workshops.
