► Get Your Publicity Out There

Get your publicity out there.

The Students' Association would love to help you publicise your society's events, and we've got a few suggestions on how to go about it.

What We can Offer:

1. Poster Runs
Q. What do I have to do?

A. Submit 35 posters (up to A3 size) to the General Office on Monday. There are a limited number of slots available, so the sooner you submit your posters, the more chance there is of getting them sent out! Posters will then be distributed on Tuesday.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. If the event you're advertising is taking place in the Union, the poster run service is free.  Otherwise it's £10 for affiliated societies, £15 for non-affiliated societies and £100+VAT for commercial companies.

2. SubTV
Q. What is SubTV?

A. They are adverts displayed on the screens in the Main Bar; you can have your advertising on there too!

Q. What do I have to do?

A. Just submit artwork via email (sadesign@st-andrews.ac.uk) in the following formats:

>>SubTV - 856 x 480 pixels for the widescreens.  Must be JPG!

Q. How much does it cost?

A. The fees for these services are £10 for student events/societies, £100+VAT for commercial advertising and (best of all) FREE for any events happening in the Students' Association.
Note: Unfortunately, we can't advertise any events in other pubs, clubs or bars.

3. Printing BIG posters
Q. What kind of posters can you print?

A. We can print all sorts of things from tiny tickets (see below) to A3 and up to the really big A0 posters - whether it's for advertising events, producing presentation displays or simply just making really big versions of pictures you like, we can help.

Q. What kind of papers are posters going to be printed on?

A. We print onto 100gsm bright white paper as standard, but if you'd prefer presentation quality paper (190gsm gloss), we can accommodate.

Q. Preferred format of artworks?
A. Ideally, we'd like to receive artwork in PDF format, but we can accept most file types except Microsoft Publisher.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. A1 posters cost £18 (or upgrade to presentation paper for an extra £4).
A0 posters cost £28 (or upgrade to presentation paper for an extra £7).

 4. Printing Tickets
Q. What sort of tickets do you print?

A. We print full colour, sequentially numbered tickets on watermarked paper.  They've got two stubs (for box office and door), with a part to be retained by your guests as a souvenir.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. Affiliated groups: Just 8p per ticket (in multiples of 8)
    Non-affiliated groups, 11p per ticket.

Q. What do I have to do?

A. Submit your artwork by email to sadesign@st-andrews.ac.uk. Have a look at this ticket template to see how it should be put together.

5. Banners
Q: What sizes can you make and how long do they last?

A: We can make any size of banner from 50cm square to something that could wrap a building. Made from PVC and printed with light-fast ink, the banners will last at least three years with minimal fading if well cared for.
All banners are priced per metre (see our prices page for example prices).

6. Radio Adverts

Q: How can I advertise on STAR www.standrewsradio.com, the student radio station?

A: STAR can produce audio advertisements ready for live broadcast that will get played approx. 20 times a day, for as long as you'd like your ad aired. All you have to do is email advertising@standrewsradio.com with the subject line "(your business/event) Jingle Request" and an outline of what you'd like your ad to sound like (please include a script as well).

Q: How much does it cost?
A: For affiliated societies, there is a fee of £10 for the production of a jingle and free to run it for as long as you'd like. For non-affiliated societies, there is the same fee for production costs, plus an additional £5 for every day you'd want STAR to play your advertisements. For commercial companies, there is a flat fee of £100 (+ VAT) for production and air time.

Q: Why should I advertise on STAR?

A: STAR is one of the largest societies, with over 300 students involved and even more that will tune in at any given time. Your ad will not only reach the radio staff (DJs, Producers, News Team, Music Team, etc), but also the station's ever-expanding audience, and so has the potential to reach more people effectively than a poster run.

Q: How else can I promote my business on the radio?

A: We have sponsorship programs than can be arranged through sponsorship@standrewsradio.com. If you'd like to promote a certain society, we are happy to set up a STAR Special that will give your society an hour of live broadcasting time to use as you wish. Email programming@standrewsradio.com for more information.

7. Doing the legwork yourself
Q: What's the best way to publicise an event?

A: The best way is definitely Word of Mouth - it carries the most weight and is by far the cheapest and most environmentally friendly option. Tell your friends, and spread the word through social network sites - ask people to pass it on.

Q: What am I specifically not allowed to do?
A: Whatever you're publicising, the law remains firm - don't break the law!  This includes putting posters onto lamp-posts or other street furniture; marking pavements or walls (all these constitute breaches of the Roads (Scotland) Act and may result in a criminal charge.  In addition, halls of residence are private property, and you must have permission from either the Residence Manager(s) or Warden before distributing publicity.  If in doubt, ASK.
