Schools

Volunteering for debating in schools is a great way to contribute to the local community as well as improving your own debating skills.

The UDS is involved in a number of competitions for which we need people to judge, chair and act as general helpers.

University of St Andrews Union Debating Society
Senior Schools Competition

Each year, St Andrews hosts a schools competition for senior students throughout Scotland. This year we are hoping to make it more of an international event with schools coming from England and Canada.

The UDS Schools Competition 2010 will be held in the Martinmas (first) Semester on November 17th. Registration will open soon. Contact the Schools Secretary for more information.

International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD)

IYCD is a competition for under-15s run by a collection of university debating socities. Regional rounds are designed to be self-contained competitions in their own right with the finals day held in the spring. St Andrews runs Scotland's regional round in late January/early February. As a part of our regional round, we run a training session for competitors in the week preceding it. To learn more about the competition, visit the website at www.icyd.com.

The Ross Cup

The Ross Cup is an annual event held by the UDS. It is an invitation only event, in which the four best senior debating teams on the Scottish schools circuit compete against each other. It is normally held in April or May, with Lower Parliament Hall as the venue. The motion is not pre-released and the format is the usual British Parliamentary.
