Training
Hone your speaking skills through our extensive training programmes. The Union Debating Society offers you a chance to improve your oratory in many ways through our Public Speaking Training or Inter'-Varsity Training. Both offer specialised advice and practice with widely successful students and graduates. You will have the opportunity to practice weekly and even be sent to competitions if you so desire!

St Andrews' Public Speaking training program uses one evening per week to improve students speaking skills. These skills range from the practical (tutorial presentations, business presentations) to the formal (how to speak in Lower Parliament Hall, how to give a speech as the leader of a country). Sessions are divided into two week blocks, with one session each week. Students will have a chance to practice their oratory skills in front of the rest of the group and work on long-prep speeches.
PUBLIC SPEAKING SESSIONS: Wednesday 2pm, Venue 2, top floor of the Union
St Andrews trains students in how to speak and judge on the competitive university circuit. Students will go through the basics of British Parliamentary debating (two teams, four speakers per side, 15 minutes prep. time) and work through principled arguments to improve their skills. They have the option of being sent to competitions throughout the UK, Europe, and the world.
BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE INTER'-VARSITY SESSIONS: Wednesday, 2pm, Venue 2, top floor of the Union

Training for advanced speakers (at least one year's experience) continues in a special session each week. Sessions will focus on specific topic areas (China, Doha, Biogenerics) and will go through rigorous judging and critique. Please speak to the IV Secretary, Miss Laura Mattina, to join the advanced session.
ADVANCED INTER'-VARSITY SESSIONS: Wednesday 2pm, Salad Bowl and Sunday, 7.30pm, Committee Room, top floor of the Union
