Inter'-Varsity Debating
Enjoy training? The Union Debating Society offers opportunities to travel to other universities to debate in Inter'-Varsity competitions. It's a great way to meet new people from other universities and exercise the debating skills you've learnt and built on through our comprehensive training programme.
NEXT COMPETITION: European Debating Competition, Istanbul
CALENDAR of IV Competitions for this term.
BOGWALL - external experience
Freshers are sent off to Bogwall, a purely first-year competition held by Scottish universities and Durham, for a day of debating against other university students for the first time. Last year, two teams broke to the final at Bogwall in Dundee.
To join the fun, contact the IV Secretary, Miss Laura Mattina.
MAIDEN'S - internal practice
For anyone who's never before spoken at the table in Lower Parliament Hall, St. Andrews offers the Maiden's Competition. The competition takes place after several weeks of Inter'-Varsity training sessions, so you have time to learn to trade and check out the competition. There are 3-4 preliminary rounds (sometimes a semi-final) and a final held in Lower Parliament Hall in front of the full House. The winner's of Maidens 2006 are:
1st Place: Frank DiTraglia with 288 points
2nd Place: Katie Meyer with 292 points
Further queries should be directed to the Internal Secretary, Miss Rebecca Emmett.
BALAKA INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS' COMPETITION
For any and all who are interested in testing their abilities on an individual-basis. This competition is held in individual format with three speakers per side and all other British Parliamentary Debate rules apply. The competition is usually held in the spring and is always followed by a sumptious curry meal at the Balaka Restaurant, our generous sponsors.
You can learn more about the Balaka Individual Speakers' Competition here.
