Run in conjunction with the newspaper - is the first big schools' event of the year. It consists of a number of rounds spread out over various weekday evenings. Usually we send Freshers along to one debate to see what the format is, before sending them in official capacity, as serjeant or a wing judge (that's someone judging alongside the chair). We always provide transport for these groups of people when necessary. One advantage of helping in the Courier competition is that you get a free supper afterwards, and may even be invited to the Courier Final Diner (a black-tie event at one of the nicest hotels in St Andrews).
Helping with Schools Debating is an excellent way to gain experience at
judging and chairing debates. St Andrews Union Debating Society is involved
in a number of competitions for which we need people to judge, chair,
serjeant and act as general helpers. The amount of time you devote to
Schools' Debating is entirely optional. Helping with debating in schools is
also a great way to contribute to the local community as well as improving
your own debating skills.
If you'd like to participate in Schools' Debating please contact the schools secretary, Miss Sally Young.
