1.0 Convenor’s Welcome
1.1 Adoption of Agenda
Dave welcomes everyone and thanks them for coming-it is great to see that so many people could make it! Dave explains that he shall be adopting the agenda as outlined in the AGM booklet.
Lindsay Macdougall contests the inclusion of the phrase ‘Thanks for being a great shag!’ under article 4.3 but Dave rules that this is a fair representation of what was said, having said it himself. The Minutes are approved without further objection.
2.0 Apologies for Absence
No apologies have been received.
3.0 Reports from the Executive Committee
3.1 SSC Charities Officer (Campaign Convenor) David Haines
Dave says that he could talk about the Campaign for hours so he will try to sum it up. When he took up the position of Convenor the Campaign had improved enormously and he hopes that he is passing it on to Will in an even stronger position. He is very proud that it is one of the most successful societies in St Andrews. A few highlights for Dave have been the end of the Race to Amsterdam and breathing a sigh of relief that there were no accidents, when he turned up to the Union ridiculously early to find loads of enthusiastic people waiting to go and collect in Dundee for Myeloma UK and Katie’s face when she walked in on Rich Robinson in the shower! But mainly Dave has enjoyed working with a wide variety of enthusiastic and talented people.
3.2 Vice Convenor and Collections Co-ordinator Sarah Secombes
Sarah starts by saying that Dave stole her favourite moment! Sarah goes on to say how when she joined the Campaign two and a half years ago she felt a little scared by everyone on Charities but now she hopes she has become part of the group! She has had so much fun and everyone has been fantastic. Initially Sarah was apprehensive about taking on the Collections position and she still doesn’t really know how she managed to get loads of people to come to Dundee and raise almost £1000 for Myeloma UK! She thanks her Collections officers who were amazing even when there wasn’t much to do to help and she gives them little gifts as a thank you. Sarah says that the best collector award for Semester 1 goes to Andrew Titley who collected over £400 which is fantastic, and for Semester 2 it goes to Karen Koehler who raised £229.08! A round of applause and everyone takes their awards. Sarah announces that the Collector of the year award goes to David Haines who raised £446. Sarah will let Clare reveal how much money was collected over the whole year when she announces the year’s totals. Sarah overall has had a wonderful year on Exec and to say a little thank you for everyone’s support she hands out personalised lion teddies to everyone on the Exec!
3.3 Secretary Jade Finn
Jade says that unfortunately she doesn’t have gifts to give out or any exciting totals to announce! But she has still had a really good year being Secretary. Initially Jade was a little daunted taking over the position of Secretary from Lydia Warren who is lovely and super-organised but she hopes that she has managed to live up to her high standards! She has really enjoyed being part of Exec and getting to find out what goes on behind the scenes. She especially enjoyed liaising with the charities we support and building up a relationship with people who actually work for the charities who are going to benefit from the money we raise. She admits that she is not the most outgoing person so the position of Secretary was perfect for her because she could get on with her tasks in her own time. She thanks everyone on the Exec for making it such a great year.
3.4 Treasurer Clare Rogowski
Clare thanks everyone on the Campaign for all of their hard work throughout this year’s campaign. There has been amazing co-ordination between committee members and loads of money has been raised! Although most of the totals will be revealed later, Clare does announce that for 6 Noms we have raised £44,704.26! A brilliant contribution to that figure came from RAG Week and the Hitchhikes. That means that each nominated charity is going to receive a cheque for £6,526.78 and maybe a bit more when all of our events have finished- this is an amazing amount of money! Although at times Clare had to climb a mountain of coins in the Cash Office she has had a great year and she thanks everyone for making it so enjoyable.
3.5 Events Coordinator Karlie Robinson
Karlie can’t believe that 7-8 months ago in Semester 1 she was making her welcome speech- the time has gone so fast and it was just as scary public speaking then as it is now! She feels she has changed a lot whilst being the Events Coordinator. She has had a really good time even though she is sad that many events were never allowed to happen. But she did manage to run three successful bops, a few bake sales and a fun stall at the Rugby Sevens match. She really hopes that the events put on this year have managed to spread the word about the Campaign and she is really pleased that Rory has become a recognisable feature of the Campaign- nearly every student knows who he is. Karlie feels she has learnt a lot about how the Union works and she thinks that the publicity posters have been great this year. She thanks everyone to helping out and for going along to all of the events, especially the enthusiastic first years who have been the main volunteers at the last few events. She thanks Mhairi and Nicola for being great Event officers and she gives them both little gifts a thank you. She hopes that next year the events will be even bigger and better!
3.6 RAG Week Coordinator Katie Fowler
Katie feels she has become a new woman in the last year! She used to hate public speaking and now she doesn’t mind it so much. She says that RAG Week was wonderful- even though it did occasionally have its stressful moments – and at times it even seemed charitable hell- in the end it was a big success. RAG Week raised a record-breaking £11,288.12! Katie says that the ‘Pirates vs. Ninjas’ and Toga bops were great, as was the live music night, comedy night and Mr. St Andrews. Katie thanks Elizabeth for all of her hard work for the Fashion Show and she thanks Lindsay, Jen and Lydia for organising the bingo night. Katie says that it was a delight to work with everyone involved and she says a special thanks to Alison Hunter, Bruce and Mandy who were integral to the smooth running of certain events. Katie loved the purple theme this year and the cheeky slogans and she hopes that they might be used again next year.
3.7 Hitchhike Coordinator Tom Hobbs
Tom thanks everyone who ran in the race this year and who helped to organise it. Special thanks go to the safety team in St Andrews, Sarah and Nick, who did a smashing job making sure everyone was safe and it meant Tom could get a little sleep this year! Tom announces that the Race to Amsterdam raised £21,698.19, LOST raised £351 and Jailbreak raised just over £1300! In total therefore the races made £23,649.19! Considering a few years ago St Andrews didn’t do hitchhikes this is an amazing achievement, added to this is the fact that the race this year raised the 3rd highest amount in the world for a hitchhike race (we think), so Tom is obviously very pleased.
3.8 Nominee to Exec Will Wright
To begin with Will felt he was a little lost being on Exec! He was told to ‘just do something’ and he took it to heart. He says he came up with some ambitious ideas, he helped out with the sponsorship for Hitchhikes and RAG Week, and he helped out with collections. There were many other highlights throughout the year including Dave getting gunged! Will thinks he has learnt a lot about himself this year. He thanks everyone on Exec for their help and support throughout the year. And he lets everyone know his final secret: a coin cannot be balanced on an orange!
4.0 Announcement of year-end totals by Treasurer Clare Rogowski
Using the genius comedy cheques that were made by Ben, Clare announces the end of year totals for this year. She hands to Dave a cheque that says that in total for our 6 Noms this year the Campaign raised £44,704.26! And in total throughout the whole year for everything the Campaign has raised £55,898.38 and counting! Clare thanks everyone for their contribution in achieving these great totals.
5.0 Matt Berry announces the winner of the inter-hall fundraising league
Matt introduces himself as the Hall Rep for the campaign. From last Easter till this Easter an inter-hall fundraising league has been running. Although DRA raised most money overall because they have a massive hall population, per head the most amount raised came from John Burnet Hall. So well done John Burnet Hall! Once of their residents comes to collect the 20-year-old wooden shield that Dave recently found as a prize.
6.0 Convenorship Handover
6.1 Personal Thanks and Presentation to Exec
Dave thanks everyone who has been involved with the Campaign this year. Before he talks about the Exec he wants to thank Katherine Peck for efficiently and successfully running the cloakrooms this year- she has done a fantastic job. Dave says that some people are not in the limelight and some things can get eclipsed by events like the Hitchhikes and RAG Week, and therefore thanks Alex Gnanapragasm for his enormous efforts to co-ordinate Run with Rory. Dave notes that it is hard to always see the amount of work that goes into organising them behind the scenes, and that some events take an enormous effort to stage. Dave thus starts by thanking Tom for working tirelessly for the last three years on the Hitchhikes. He has put a vast amount of effort in over this year and few realise the hideous administrative tasks that need to be done. Dave gives Tom a pack of Best as a token of his appreciation. Next Dave says that Katie managed to make people really excited about RAG Week this year-it was a huge success and she worked really hard to pull it all off smoothly. Dave thanks Katie with another alcoholic present. Next Dave thanks Clare for putting in so many hours in the ‘Cash Orifice’ this year and though nobody saw her she was always working on an endless pile of money or those bus tickets that were never claimed! He thanks her with yet more booze. Dave says that Karlie has had a very hard job this year. She was just told to do something, anything and make money! Although some great ideas didn’t ever come to fruition, Karlie worked tirelessly to try to get events off the ground. She was always so determined to make things happen even when circumstances were making it very difficult for her. Dave commends her effort and ambition and thanks her for her contribution to the campaign this year. Karlie gets a bottle of ‘wkd’ as a thank you. Dave next thanks Jade for her hard work behind the scenes as Secretary. He thought it was great this year to have the minutes available so soon after each of the meetings and he thanks her also for the work she put into organising the AGM. Jade gets a bottle of wine as a thank you. Dave thanks Sarah for her immense dedication to Charities this year. She put more hours in than him during RAG Week and she was very helpful during the Race. He feels Sarah has turned collections around this year, she was always there with a smile on her face and they have become a serious way of raising lots of cash. Dave thanks Sarah with a bottle of wine. Last but not least Dave thanks Will for his energy and enthusiasm this year. He is delighted that such a creative innovator who comes up with wacky ideas will be taking over from him. He thanks Will for his hard work this year and he wishes him great success next year but he does hope that he will occasionally fill in some forms and do things by the book!
6.2 David Haines hands over Convenorship to Will Wright
6.3 New Convenor’s Welcome
Will thanks Dave for his kind words about everybody on Exec, but Will feels that the person who should be thanked the most is Dave himself. Dave has been a superb Convenor this year and to show a token of the Exec’s appreciation a personalised memoir of Dave’s ‘This is your life in charities’ has been made including photos and written tributes. Dave thanks everyone for such a thoughtful and unique gift. Will goes on to introduce himself as the Convenor for the next year. For better or for worse, he says, he hopes to build on the great work that Dave has done to the Campaign and he hopes it will go from strength to strength. He thanks in advance all of the brave and committed people who will be on next year’s committee and he looks forward to finding out who will be on next year’s Exec. Without further ado Will starts the committee selection process.
