ABOUT US
So who are we and what do we do?
We are the University of St Andrews Students' Association Charities Campaign (or USASACC) We are a subcommittee of the Union, which effectively means that we are the Union's nominated people to give money to charity. We are also the only organisation sanctioned by the University to give money to charity on its behalf. More recently we have also become an official University society!
So then, how do we get said money?
The committee aims to raise money by putting on fantastic events for students to enjoy; what a good deal! We also try and get involved with the community by having more traditional fund-raising activities. Hopefully you may be aware of some of the things we like to do, such as Run with Rory (our Lion mascot), bake sales (usually outside the Library), cloakrooms at the Bop, and many more!
Our biggest money-spinners are the hitchhike events and RAG week.
The other part of our job is to process everyone else's charity work. Every society and subcommittee of the Union and Halls of Residence who want to give money to charity are legally required to do it through us. This is great, because we add everyone's efforts together and can celebrate the University's success at raising money for great causes.
We then need to distribute the money wisely:
All of our events benefit our six nominated charities which are elected every year. Five charities are elected by the student body as a whole at the AGM, and the sixth is a free choice made by the newly-installed Convenor. Everyone else can give money to whoever they please (registered charities only, of course), as long as they process it through our books! We work for our chosen charities because we care, and because the campaign is a brilliant place to be, group of people to work with, and opportunity to have fun.
Can anyone get involved?
Of course! Please either email us or, more importantly, come along to one of our meetings. They are on Mondays at 7.30pm in the Committee Room. We might have chocolate or sweets.
