Meet people, do stuff.
Celtic

One of the University's oldest societies, promoting Scottish Culture through Scottish Country Dance and Scottish Gaelic Language Classes.

The Celtic and Ceilidh Society, one of St Andrews'  oldest and friendliest societies, embraces all things Scottish!

We specialise in Scottish Gaelic Language  classes and most of all Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes. Throughout the year we hold lots of ceilidhs, which are open to anyone - whether you're a current member or not - including calendar highlight Castle Ceilidh, which we hold each year in the grounds of St Andrews Castle! We also host dances and balls which give our SCD learners a chance to show off the steps they've learned, and to  meet dancers from other groups, especially those from  other Scottish university societies and local RSCDS branches.

  • Our Scottish Country Dance classes cater to all levels, whether you simply want to survive a ceilidh, or show off on stage with our demonstration team. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! Our  dance classes are at 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Sundays in Boys Brigade Hall. They're led by members of the society with years of dancing experience, trained by fully qualified RSCDS teachers. Even if you've got two left feet, they'll have you enjoying this brilliantly Scottish social dance form in no time at all!

Your first class is completely free with no obligation to sign up until your second. Don't worry if it's already a few weeks into the semester, it's your first class that's free, no matter when you take it!
SAFETY NOTICE: Please wear sensible shoes. No heels!

  • Our Scottish Gaelic Language classes cater more to beginners, and  we also  encourage more experienced speakers to join and lend their skill to the conversations. This year in place of our 'advanced' classes we are running workshops  on a variety of topics related to the language and its relationship with Scotland. These are fun, info-filled sessions which really delve into elements of myth, social history and Gaelic culture, and are open to everyone, whether or not you also attend the Gaelic classes. Our lovely teacher, Andrew, leads  the class every Monday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in the Student  Union's Committee Meeting Room.

Not sure if learning Gaelic is for you? Well, come along and give it a go! Your first class with us is free, no matter when in the year you join us!

Outside of class we hold frequent socials, be it beach bonfires in all (most) weathers, or cosy movie nights in. After classes we will often  bundle up and set on  Jannetta's for ice cream, or slip  along to the pub for a wee dram (IRN BRU or whisky, we'll no' mind idir)!

Join us for a real Scottish experience which combines the traditional with kilt-fulls of fun!
